Description

The EZE-Sleeve® Steel Repair Sleeve offers repair shops an outstanding and straightforward solution for the repair of end shields and housings. Specifically developed for customers and applications that prefer steel as a material, we rely on uncompromising material quality. Instead of difficult-to-machine standard mild steel, our EZE-Sleeves® consist of highly specialized free-machining steel – for maximum precision, minimal tool wear, and a permanently secure bearing seat.

Your Benefits at a Glance: Why our free-machining steel makes the difference

The use of standard steel tubing often leads to rough, grooved surfaces during machining, which flatten under the load of the rotor and loosen the bearing seat. The EZE-Sleeve® made of C12L14 free-machining steel completely eliminates this risk:

  • Flawless Surface Quality: Our special free-machining steel can be machined extremely smoothly and cleanly during the final boring. No thread-like grooves are created. The inner diameter remains permanently dimensionally stable even under radial load – the bearing sits perfectly.
  • Significant Time Savings: Since the cutting tool provides a flawless finish even on the first pass, the time-consuming and tedious regrinding of the inner surface is completely eliminated. Your repair times drop significantly.
  • Minimized Tool Wear: In contrast to tough mild steel, C12L14 steel is highly gentle on tools. Even conventional HSS tools achieve long service lives; expensive special carbide inserts are not strictly necessary.
  • Excellent Thermal Conductivity & Robustness: Manufacturing from high-quality steel guarantees excellent heat dissipation from the bearing area and offers exceptional mechanical resistance with high flexibility.
  • Quality and Sustainability: Each steel EZE-Sleeve® provides a precise finish and enables the resource-saving continued use of expensive original end shields.

Installation Guide: Professional Assembly of the Steel Repair Sleeves

The installation of the steel EZE-Sleeves® follows the same proven principle as the cast iron variant. For a precise repair, we recommend clamping the end shield in a 4-jaw chuck to ensure exact centering (axial and radial run-out) using a dial indicator.

  1. Dimension Determination: Measure the outside diameter (O.D.) of the steel repair sleeve at two to three different points and calculate the average value.
  2. Boring the Housing (Press Fit): Bore out the defective bearing seat in the housing to an undersize to achieve a press fit. As a rule of thumb: 0.0005" per 1" of sleeve diameter (for standard sleeves under 100 mm, this corresponds to a press fit of approx. 0.05 mm or 0.002"). Important: Measure precisely!
  3. Mounting the Sleeve (Thermal Shrink-Fitting Recommended): To avoid shifting the carefully centered housing in the lathe, a thermal shrink fit is the safest method. Cool the sleeve significantly with liquid CO2. The sleeve shrinks by a few thousandths and can be inserted into the housing without resistance. As it warms to room temperature, it anchors itself firmly (offers 3 times the holding power of a standard mechanical press fit). Alternative methods: Pressing in via tailstock, hydraulic press, or careful tapping with soft material.
  4. Test Step & Dimension Check: A small edge typically protrudes from the mounted sleeve. Initially, bore out only this protruding edge as a test and adjust the tool feed until the required final bearing dimension is exactly reached.
  5. Finishing (Boring): Now bore the entire inner diameter of the steel sleeve to the final ball bearing dimension using a fine feed. Thanks to the free-machining steel, you will achieve excellent surface quality. If necessary, minimal polishing/sanding can be done for absolute dimensional accuracy.
  6. Completion: Cut off the protruding edge of the sleeve and turn a slight chamfer to facilitate the subsequent assembly of the ball bearing. The end shield is now ready for installation.
